St Andrews & Edinburgh

Archbishop Leo Cushley (1961 – ) is the 56th Bishop of St Andrews and 8th Archbishop of St Andrews & Edinburgh. Born in Lanarkshire, Leo Cushley was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Motherwell in 1985. In 1994, he was recruited by the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See, going on to serve in Burundi, Portugal, Southern Africa and the United Nations in New York. From 2009 until 2013, he was head of the English-language section of the Holy See’s Secretariat of State in Rome before being appointed as Archbishop of St Andrews & Edinburgh by His Holiness Pope Francis in 2013.

FR MICHAEL JOHN GALBRAITH

Parish Priest, Chaplain of Canmore and Honorary Catholic Chaplain to the University of St Andrews

Fr Galbraith was born in West Lothian, his family being from the Island of Barra in the Outer Hebrides. He went to school at St Mary’s Academy, Bathgate, and gained an MA (Hons) in philosophy and theology at the University of Glasgow. He studied for the Priesthood at the Royal Scots College, Spain, and gained an STB in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical University of Salamanca. He then specialised with a Postgraduate STL in Dogmatic Theology from the same institution. As a curate, he was appointed for several years to St John the Baptist’s (Corstorphine), Our Lady of Lourdes (Currie), St Joseph’s (Balerno), St Mary’s (Ratho), St Kentigern’s (Barnton), and St Andrew’s (Ravelston). In 2008, he was appointed parish priest of St Mary's and St David's (Hawick), Immaculate Conception (Jedburgh), and St Mary's (Kelso). He was then appointed parish priest of Our Lady & St Bridget’s (West Calder), St Thomas’ (Addiewell), and Prison Chaplain to HMP Addiewell, 2012-2014. In 2014, he was appointed parish priest of St James’ (St Andrews), Christ the King (Pittenweem and Crail), and Honorary Catholic Chaplain to the University of St Andrews. In 2018, the above Fife parishes were united, by canonical decree, as the original parish of St James’ by His Grace, the Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh.

The estimated Catholic population of the Archdiocese is 115,000.
